CBT session in a therapy environment

Talking Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy was created by Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s initially as a treatment for depression. Albert Ellis developed an earlier related approach called Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) which also influenced CBT.

CBT works well with people suffering from low self esteem, mental health conditions, negative self talk, anxiety, low self worth, lack confidence, upsetting thoughts , job loss, troubling conditions, wellbeing, worry, illness, feeling guilty, relationships, beliefs, emotions,

CBT is offered by the NHS and can be arranged through your local GP the average waiting time to start therapy is between 60 -75 weeks for individual therapy and 10 - 13 weeks for online CBT all depending in which region of the UK you are living.

CBT differs to other Therapies as its usually more structured and practical than many other talking therapies . You and the therapist agree on a specific difficulty look at how thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions affect one another then try out changes between sessions. It can include examining a belief, reducing avoidance or gradually facing a feared situation.

CBT normally goes back a little into your history to look at the opposing problems to get an idea of how your feeling, thinking and whats possibly holding you back. CBT differs to other therapies for example Psychiatry or Schema therapy or Counselling where they tend to go back into childhood and look at childhood behaviour, trauma and patterns. CBT is more about focusing on the now and developing coping mechanisms and strategies to help you to be able to move forwards in life looking at the way you think about things recognising your feelings and behaviour and questioning thought patterns and getting you to think more positively about yourself and the environment around you.

CBT Sessions normally get the client to keep a journal and write things down so the client can look back at certain days and times where they may have struggled with a situation or a feeling or thought and then see how they handled it and what they did differently at the time later reflecting back on the journal helping them how to implement those changes for the future .
